New year, new beauty resolutions? Remember – beauty is a marathon, not a sprint, so this year we’re trying to stop looking for quick fixes and instead learning that consistency is key. Trust us, the habits you pick up now will make your skin and hair happier and healthier in the long run. We’ve compiled a few tips and tricks that will help you update your beauty routine for 2021…
1. Keep it simple
With new products, trends and hacks emerging everywhere all the time, it’s easy to fall into the rabbit hole of wanting to try them all. But keep in mind – a simple routine is often better. All you really need is a good cleanser (no, makeup wipes don’t count), a moisturiser and SPF. And you don’t need to exfoliate every night, 2-3 times a week is just fine. Obviously if you’d like to treat a skin condition, you can add in active ingredients like vitamin c (brightening) or salicylic acid (acne treatment).
Pro tip: Learn to read and analyse ingredient lists, so you know what you’re actually putting on your face and can avoid potentially irritating ingredients like fragrance and essential oils.
2. Be gentle
These last few months have been tough enough, so this year were trying to be really gentle to ourselves and this can also apply to almost every step to your beauty routine. Any excessive scrubbing, dragging or rubbing can cause irritation, redness and premature signs of ageing on our skin and breakage in your hair. Instead of trying to remove your eye makeup aggressively, let a cotton pad with eye makeup remover soak on your eye for 30 seconds and gently wipe away. Pat your skin dry with a towel instead of rubbing and be gentle when brushing your hair. You’ve got this!
3. SPF every day
If there is one thing that is non-negotiable – it’s SPF. Sun protection is the ultimate essential that will protect your skin from harmful UVA/UVB rays and will prevent and minimise irritation, signs of ageing, inflammation, dark spots and even acne. Try to make it a habit this year to wear at least SPF 30 every day, even indoors and on cloudy or rainy days. Trust us, your skin will thank you in the long run.
4. Hair mask every week
As we’re not really going anywhere at the moment, it can be easy to neglect your hair care routine. But why not use this time to really treat and nourish your hair? Try only washing it twice a week, put some oil in the lengths and ends of your hair every time you step out the shower, use a hair mask once a week and be diligent about heat protectant. Here’s to healthy hair in 2021!
5. Lotion up
Especially in the winter months, the skin on our bodies can feel dry and itchy. Treat yourself to a gentle exfoliating scrub every week and remember to moisturise every day. Put on lotion while your skin is still damp from the shower or bath and it will lock in the moisture for the softest skin ever. Look for ultra-nourishing ingredients like ceramides and colloidal oatmeal.
